DAY TWO – TUESDAY 18 OCTOBER

Morning

08.15 – 09.00  Light buffet breakfast

09.00 – 09.05  Opening remarks

09.05 – 09.50  Session 6:  The role of carbon removal technology in out-of-sector emissions reductions
Policymakers and some airlines are looking at engineered carbon removals as a form of out-of-sector emissions reductions as a means of getting to net zero. How is carbon capture technology relevant to aviation? Can negative emissions from carbon removals be integrated into the carbon markets and emissions trading schemes?
Ted Christie-Miller, Head of Carbon Removal, BeZero
Stephen Kelly, President & GM, Europe, Middle East, Asia and Australia, 1PointFive
Amy Ruddock, VP Europe, Carbon Engineering
Rene Velasquez, Head of Global Carbon Markets, CBL (Moderator)

09.50 – 10.20  Presentation 3:  Why airlines must adapt to growing carbon costs
Has the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) had the desired effect of encouraging airlines to reduce their emissions? What are future forecast costs? How do EU ETS costs compare with the new UK ETS? How are ETS and other carbon regulatory costs, including possible fuel mandates and levies impacting airlines’ strategies?
Nigel Addison Smith, Director, PA Consulting

10.20 – 10.45  REFRESHMENT & NETWORKING BREAK

10.45 – 11.30  Session 8:  Navigating the compliance carbon markets
Aircraft operators are facing increased regulation to ensure they are monitoring their environmental performance. With obligations under a number of schemes – EU ETS, Swiss ETS, UK ETS and CORSIA – and questions about future applicability, navigating compliance requirements in the carbon markets is becoming a very difficult task. Regulations are expected to tighten and become more stringent over the coming years, with carbon market prices in an upward trend. This requires having proper oversight and understanding, and to be responsive and agile to adapt to regulatory changes and abate costs. This session will explain compliance requirements as they stand, where they may go in future and, importantly, how the carbon market works, what influences the price of carbon units and what to expect in the coming years.
Africa Abajas, Bjorn Bojesen and Mark Latimer, Vertis Environmental Finance

11.30 – 12.15  Presentation 4:  The Aviation Carbon Exchange
Developed with Xpansiv CBL, IATA’s new centralized, real-time marketplace that enables airlines and other aviation stakeholders to trade carbon offsets for CORSIA compliance or voluntary offsetting purposes. How does it work and what are the benefits of using it?
Michael Schneider, Assistant Director, Environmental Programs, IATA
Rene Velasquez, Head of Global Carbon Markets, CBL

12.15 – 13.00  Session 9:  Sustainability strategies for airlines
Except for a relatively few forward-thinking airlines, sustainability was once an after-thought by management, with few resources devoted to climate responsibility. This has changed radically in the face of increasing regulatory action, a growing awareness by the travelling public of their carbon footprint, the need for the aviation industry to play its part in tackling the global climate crisis and pressure on airlines by the financial sector and investors to act. Airlines are now appointing sustainability personnel to senior management positions and even at board level. What is the role of sustainability management? How are airlines tackling ESG reporting? Where does carbon offsetting fit into their strategy? How are airline sustainability departments handling the fast-growing need to procure sustainable aviation fuels? What advice is there for smaller airlines considering a sustainability strategy for the first time?
Grace Cheung, Group Head of Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility, Cathay Pacific
Scott Coughlan, Director of Sustainability, Alaska Airlines
Lahiru Ranasinghe, Senior Sustainability Manager, easyJet
Philip See, Chief Sustainability Officer, Malaysia Airlines
Christopher Surgenor, Editor & Publisher, GreenAir (Moderator)

13.00 – 14.15  LUNCH & NETWORKING BREAK

Afternoon

14.15 – 15.00  Presentation 5:  Measuring the carbon footprint for air travellers
Carbon calculators and flight booking platforms need an accurate, transparent and consistent measurement tool to enable air travellers to make smarter, more sustainable choices when booking. The airline and travel sectors have been working together to agree a common methodology for measuring flight carbon emissions. How was the methodology arrived at and how can it be integrated into booking platforms? What is IATA CO2 Connect?
Michael Schneider, Assistant Director, Environmental Programs, IATA
Nicole Sautter, Manager Global Sustainability, American Express Global Business Travel

15.00 – 15.45  Session 10:  Assuring the integrity of the voluntary carbon markets
Voluntary carbon offsetting has come in for criticism from environmental groups who question the practice and one major airline has now said it will not use offsets to reach its net zero by 2050 climate goal that has been set by the sector. However, the aviation sector is highly unlikely to reach this goal by in-sector means alone and will require offsets to compensate for residual emissions it cannot eliminate. A private sector task force has set an ambitious target to grow the present $300m a year global voluntary carbon market (VCM) to $100bn. From the task force, a new independent governance body has been formed to bring greater quality and integrity to trading on VCMs and is now finalising a set of Core Carbon Principles. What are these threshold standards and how will they provide confidence to airlines and others purchasing offsets? How, also, can greater transparency on offset pricing be achieved?
Gilles Dufrasne, Global Carbon Markets Lead, Carbon Market Watch
Ellen Lourie, Senior Policy Associate, International Emissions Trading Association
Oğuz Tosun, Region Head – Turkey & MENA, EKI Energy Services
Angela Foster-Rice, Senior Vice President, Strategic Business Development, Everland (Moderator)

15.30 – 16.15  SAF Stream Registration

15.45 – 16.15  REFRESHMENT & NETWORKING BREAK

16.15 – 18.00  Breakout Sessions:

1. Workshop:  Incorporating SAF in CORSIA, EU/UK ETS (Scope 1) and Corporate SAF Programmes (Scope 3)

  • Brief Introduction to SAF
  • SAF in CORSIA, EU ETS and UK ETS
  • Documents required for a SAF claim
  • SAF Certification & the issue of Proof Of Sustainability
  • Book & Claim
  • SAF Corporate Programmes
  • SAF Program Assurance Audit

Himanshu Sharma, Aviation Auditor & SAF Expert, Verifavia

2. Presentation:  Evolution of Carbon Markets from Kyoto Protocol to Paris Agreement – Decoding Article 6
This 30-minute session aims to address the current needs of the carbon markets dictated by Article 6 of Paris Agreement besides focusing the historical developments on Kyoto Flexibility Mechanisms, Voluntary Carbon Market and other bounded compliance mechanisms such as CORSIA and various ETS mechanisms. The session will help participants to understand what corresponding adjustments are being expected in global voluntary carbon market that conduct a significant transition carbon offsetting transactions and principles.
Oğuz Tosun, Region Head – Turkey & MENA, EKI Energy Services

18.00 – 19.00  APERITIF & NETWORKING
